The Bank of Zambia is gearing up to issue a new family of banknotes, the 2024 Series, on March 31, 2025.
There are six denominations in the new series, including two new, higher denominations: K200 and K500 notes. At the low end of the spectrum, the new K5 and K2 currency, until now printed as banknotes, will be produced as coins in the new series.
The bank explains, “The size of the banknotes differs and is progressive…The new banknotes are vibrant in colour, with advanced features and improved background security. These changes make the new banknotes easily recognisable.”
Zambia’s currency was last updated in 2018.
Vibrant new design reflects Zambia’s heritage and natural beauty
According to the bank, “The design of the new currency draws inspiration from the country’s rich heritage, featuring elements that celebrate our unique flora and fauna, and breathtaking waterfalls.
As you can see in the images below, the African Fish Eagle appears on the face of each note. The reverse side of each denomination features a different Zambian waterfall, along with natural flora and fauna.
By incorporating these elements, the new currency not only honours our cultural heritage, but also strengthens its role as a symbol of pride and unity for all Zambian citizens.”
Two new, higher denomination notes in the series
The four highest denomination banknotes are printed on a pure cotton substrate with a protective varnish applied after printing. The new K10 and K20 notes, however, are printed on a DURASAFE® composite substrate for greater durability.

More modern security features
Updated security features are integrated into the design of the 2024 banknotes. Some of these features are:
- Watermark: African Fish Eagle’s head combined with the face value of the banknote, which becomes visible when held up to a light source.
- Latent image: A stylized flower.
- See-through register: When viewed through a light source, the patterns on the front and reverse sides of the banknote form the image of a flower.
- Security threads: The design and color schemes of these vertical threads vary by denomination.
- Color-shifting feature: This feature is shaped like the outline of Zambia on all the notes, but the color scheme varies by denomination.
Features to help visually impaired consumers identify denominations
The large denomination numerals and (along the short edges) raised (intaglio) ink patterns are designed to help visually impaired consumers quickly identify the denomination of each note.
One-year transition period to phase out 2018 and older banknotes
All previously issued banknotes (dated 2018 and earlier) will remain valid for transactions until March 31, 2026—exactly one year after the launch of the 2024 series.
