Residents of the United Arab Emirates will soon be able to use facial recognition technology to authenticate their identity and access services. Known as the UAE Pass, it is the first digital national identity designed to allow citizens and residents in the UAE to access online services provided by thousands of government, semi-governmental and private sector agencies and organizations.

Facial recognition technology

UAE’s Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (ICA) explains that its “biometric ‘face print’ system will enable holders of an Emirates ID card to register their facial biometrics via the authority’s certification portal and link them to digital versions of their identity documents.” This use of facial recognition technology is a secure process that facilitates the registration for digital identity without the need to visit government service centers.
