On July 3, 2022, the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) introduced a new national currency symbol, according to News Notafilia.

The new symbol of the national currency was presented by Shauna Aminath, Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology of the Maldives, during a special conference on July 3. The Republic of Maldives joined the group of about 50 countries with the symbol of their currency.

The symbol is a modified letter ރ of the Taana alphabet used to write the Dhivehi (Maldivian) language.

The new currency symbol with mark usage guidelines

The new currency symbol will be used on all new government banknotes. MMA also plans to conduct educational programs to familiarize the public with the new symbol and to develop the possibility of using the symbol in digital formats.

The symbol was selected in a competition held by the central bank in 2021. The winning design was developed by Hassan Shujau.
