The Central Bank of Honduras has taken the bold step of issuing the first banknote in its history to feature a woman. The new 200 Lempiras (HNL) note has a prominent profile of Bertha Isabel Cáceres Flores, a Honduran woman who served as an environmental activist and indigenous leader from the early 1990s until her assassination in 2016.

The new banknote was put into circulation on January 20, 2026, in celebration of International Day of Women in Multilateralism (January 25).

Aesthetic design of the new banknote

The note is printed on a paper substrate and has a primary color scheme of turquoise blue. The year of the new series is 2023. As you will see in the images below, the banknote depicts the natural environment and cultural heritage Cáceres sought to protect.

The front side of the banknote features a portrait of Bertha Isabel Cáceres Flores. The background depicts a landscape that includes the Gualcarque River, a treasured natural resource. Also in the background is a fragment of traditional Lenca fabric, a symbol of Honduran cultural heritage.

Back side of the new Honduras 200 HNL Banknote

The back side of the note shows a view of the town of La Esperanza in the Intibucá region, the birthplace of Bertha Isabel Cáceres Flores. The back also includes the phrase of Caceras: ¡Despertemos humanidad! ¡Ya no hay tiempo!” (Wake up Humankind, there is no time left).
