The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has rolled out a new design of the Texas driver license (DL) and identification (ID) card. Effective August 18, 2025, all Texas driver licenses and identification cards being issued have a new look, which contains symbolic imagery and integrates more advanced security features.
“The way driver licenses are made can make a big difference in terms of public safety,” said DPS Driver License Division Chief Sheri Gipson. “This new card design will make it even more difficult for criminals to produce counterfeit cards, and it enhances ways we can protect Texans’ identities from being stolen.”
The new cards also reorganize personal information in a clear and easy-to-read format for identification and verification purposes.

The new Texas credentials have a fresh design and more security features.
Texas’ new DL and ID cards are made of tamper-resistant polycarbonate material that is difficult to reproduce and compliant with American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators standards.
New design, new REAL ID symbol
Instead of the gold star on cards in the previous design, the new credentials feature a black, laser-engraved star in the upper right corner to indicate REAL ID compliance. The state’s policy of not issuing credentials that are standard, or not REAL ID compliant, remains in force.
Previously issued cards will remain valid until their expiration date.
