The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security (TDOSHS) is issuing new Driver Licenses and ID cards with a fresh design and improved security features. Issuance of the new credentials began on August 19, 2024.
The new design will apply to all credentials issued by the TDOSHS including Regular Driver Licenses, Teen/Graduated Driver Licenses, Commercial Driver Licenses, Motorcycle License, ID Only License, REAL ID and standard credentials, and Handgun Carry Permits.
Tennessee’s driving and ID credentials were last redesigned in 2019. All previously issued credentials will remain valid until their stated expiration date.

New design celebrates the state and boosts security
The new driver licenses and ID cards feature a stylized version of Tennessee’s historic State Capitol and state flag with its iconic three-stars representing the state’s three grand divisions. The new design has a new color scheme, and features waves and patterns printed in very fine lines that are neither scannable nor easily reproduced.
The polycarbonate cards incorporate cutting edge security and printing techniques such as elaborate overlapping of data and graphics and laser engraved elements that will show if the document has been altered or is fraudulent. A machine-readable barcode with applicable class, endorsements, and restrictions is printed on the back of the card. A small ghost image of the holder’s photograph has encoded elements for automated validation to help reduce identity theft.
A new REAL ID symbol
Another notable change to Tennessee’s driving and ID credentials is to the REAL ID symbol. While previous versions of the credentials had a gold circle/star cutout symbol to indicate REAL ID compliance, the new version has a black circle/star cutout.
