Taiwan will change the numbering of the Alien Residence Certificate (ARC) ) and the Alien Permanent Residence Certificate (APRC) as of January 2nd, 2021.

These certificates will then become uniform with the Taiwanese national identity cards.

According to Taiwannews, this is done to make life easier for foreigners living in Taiwan.

The National Immigration Agency (NIA) states that the format of the ARCs and APRCS will change from two letters followed by eight digits to a single letter with nine digits.

This number change will make it easier for foreign residents to fill in online registration systems, make reservations, make banking transactions and so on.

Many of these registration systems only accept one-letter, nine-digit IDs.

According to the NIA, almost 900,000 foreigners will be able to benefit from the new system.
