As soccer fans around the globe follow and cheer the 22nd FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) World Cup in Qatar (November 18 – December 20, 2022), collectors are snapping up the commemorative banknote the Central Bank of Qatar has issued to mark the occasion. The unusual denomination for the note—22 Rials—was chosen to align with the 22nd World Cup occurring in 2022.

The bank unveiled the special commemorative note on 9 November 2022, and it is now available for purchase. The commemorative note can be purchased from currency exchange offices and banks for 75 riyals, but when used as legal tender it retains its face value of 22 riyals. Coins bearing the FIFA and the World Cup logos have also been launched.

The primary colours in the note are brown, gold, green, blue, and purple. It is printed on SAFEGUARD® Polymer, which is a “first” for Qatar currency.

Front Side

The face of the note features Arabic text. Imagery on this side includes the World Cup trophy; coat of arms with dhow, palm trees, and crossed swords; the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 logo; a skyline of modern and old buildings; and the Lusail Iconic Stadium in Lusail.

Back Side

The back side of the note features English text. Images on the back depict Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor, home of the 2022 games; an Arab sailing ship (dhow) and Al Zubara Fort; earth; the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 logo; and the World Cup trophy.

Security features

The banknote features intaglio printing, microprinting, elements in UV ink (coat of arms with dhow) and optically variable elements. In an oval field, transparent windows have been included with the World Cup trophy in the middle. On both sides of the World Cup Qatar 2022 logo (in the middle of the note, at the bottom), the numerals ‘22’ appear in Latin and Arabic in transmitted light. This feature is visible on both sides of the note. There is no security thread or watermark. Other security features have not yet been publicized.
