The Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) will soon start issuing driver licenses and ID cards with a brand new design and upgraded security features. The new cards will be available in mid-March, for both the Travel ID (or REAL ID) and the standard driver license and ID card.
The visual design of the cards reflects the diversity of Arizona terrain and communities. Images of saguaro cactus and ponderosa pine tree images are depicted in the artwork.

The new design includes several new security features that will help prevent counterfeit copies and fraudulent use. They will also give authenticators greater assurance that a card is genuine. New security features of the new cards include:
- 100% polycarbonate material that consists of multiple layers of plastic, fused together without adhesives, to form a solid structure impervious to tampering. The high durability of polycarbonate also provides the longest lifespan of any card, allowing for extended card life without compromise.
- Laser-engraved information and black and white photo of the cardholder.
- Two high-resolution images which appear, depending on the viewing angle of the card. This will allow greater assurance in authentication while protecting against duplication or reproduction.
- “Secure Surface” is another security feature that incorporates a slightly raised (tactile) surface that provides a subtle feel to part of the card. It is another quick authenticator for law enforcement and other authorities. It also helps reduce potential alterations or fraudulent cards.
Also available in a new design are organ donor and Veteran symbols. The current card design will continue to be issued to applicants through February 28, 2023. All issued credentials will remain valid until the expiration date.
