The State of Nebraska has introduced a new generation of driver licenses and state ID cards designed to be stronger, more secure, and reflective of the state’s iconic symbols. The Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles announced that it will begin issuing the new cards at select locations this month. By mid-April, they expect all of its service centers to be issuing the new credentials. (All previously issued cards will remain valid until their stated expiration date.)

New Nebraska Identification Card
Iconic state imagery built into the design
Some of the iconic state imagery visible in the sample cards above include the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge, cattle grazing on the prairie, wheat, a honeybee (the official state insect), and the Wildcat hills.
Upgraded security features
The new cards are produced using 100% polycarbonate, making them more durable and harder to counterfeit.
One of the most notable changes from the previous license and ID card designs is the use of black-and-white, laser engraved photo of the cardholder. This makes the portrait easier to see even in low light settings, and the laser engraving is difficult to tamper with or replicate.
The new credentials have also added modern security features such as textured elements, and a secondary image of the cardholder that flips based on viewing angle.
A new REAL ID symbol for the new credentials
The previous Nebraska driver license and ID card indicated REAL ID status with a gold circle/star cutout symbol. As you can see in the images above, the new REAL ID symbol is a black circle/star cutout.
