The Bank of Namibia recently introduced a N$60.00 Commemorative Banknote in honor of the late Dr. Hage G. Geingob, a past president and historical leader in the African nation. The note has been given a thematic name: “60 years of excellence: a legacy of dedication and service.”

Issued on March 17, 2025, the special edition banknote recognizes what the bank describes as Dr. Geingob’s “life of service and steadfast dedication to Namibia’s democracy, economic progress, and social inclusion.”

The 60 dollar denomination note was chosen for the commemorative banknote to symbolize the 60 years Dr. Geingob devoted to the selfless service of this nation. There is no other 60 dollar denomination banknote in Namibia.

The Dr. Hage G. Geingob Commemorative Banknote will circulate alongside existing banknotes. It serves both as legal tender and as a collector’s item.

Fun fact: In 2020 the Bank of Namibia issued a special banknote to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the country’s independence. The denomination of 30 Namibian dollars was chosen, to symbolize the 30 years of independence. There is no other 30-dollar denomination in Namibia.

A closer look at the commemorative banknote

This commemorative banknote, printed on a SAFEGUARD® polymer substrate, is illustrated below. Dr. Geingob is depicted on both sides of the note. The custom serial number begins with ‘HGG’ in honor of Dr. Geingob.

The face of the note features a circle of embossed (tactile) dots ensure accessibility for the visually impaired.

More new Namibian banknotes to be issued

The Bank of Namibia intends to issue a new family of notes in mid-2025, coexisting with the current currency to allow for a gradual transition. The current Namibian banknote series has been in circulation since 2012.
