Malawi’s Minister of Homeland Security Ken Zikhale Ng’oma announced this week that expired national identity cards will be considered valid until January 2026.

The extension was announced as the Malawi Electoral Commission prepares to start voter registration next year for the 2025 Presidential Elections. This is significant because the national ID card is the only document a citizen can use to register to vote in Malawi.

The National Registration Bureau will also stop charging citizens a fee to renew a lost national ID card or renew an expired card.
