The Central Bank of the Islamic Republic of Iran (CBI) put two new banknotes into circulation on 13 July 2022. The 10,000-Rial and 20,000-Rial notes are the latest in a series being issued during the country’s transition from the currency name Rial to the future name: Tomana. The first banknote in this interim series, the 50,000-Rial note, was put into circulation early last year.

During a multi-year period of currency reform, Iran will issue interim banknotes, each with a dual denomination of Iranian rials (with phantom numbers) and tomancers. For all notes of the interim series, the conversion rate is 10,000 rials = 1 toman.

A closer look at the new notes

Both new notes are printed on paper (cotton) that is treated with a protective varnish. Each note measures 156 x 71 mm.
