India has launched its very first ePassport, ushering an era of enhanced security and streamlined border crossing checks for its citizens. The document complies with current ICAO standards.

This upgraded ePassport contains an RFID chip and an antenna, embedded beneath the gold-colored logo on its cover. The chip and antenna store a digitally signed copy of the holder’s personal data and biometric information (such as fingerprints and facial recognition details). All personal data appears both in print and in the encrypted chip, and is protected by Public Key Infrastructure (PKI).

Passport covers have a familiar color-coding system

The new passports have covers in a color scheme similar to what many other countries use. This color-coding system will be familiar to border agents around the globe. The cover colors are as follows:

  • Navy blue: Ordinary (for most citizens)
  • White: Official (for government representatives and officials)
  • Red passports: Diplomatic (for diplomats and ambassadors)

Speed and security at border crossings and beyond

The ePassport will streamline the border crossing process for its holders. Travelers with the ePassport can pass through contactless e-gates automatically, thus reducing their wait time while also eliminating human error on the part of border officials.

Fighting fraud with encryption and modern security features

Thanks to its multi-layer encryption, along with security features such as microtext and holograms, the ePassport is difficult if not impossible to counterfeit.

The transition from old to new passport

Previously issued “traditional” passports will remain valid until their stated expiration date. However, citizens have the option to upgrade to the ePassport before their existing passport expires.
