Frontex, the European border and coast guard service, recently announced that it is developing a next-generation system to make checking travel and identity documents more effective. The new system will be based on rigorous technical standards for digital images that set a new quality benchmark for authenticating documents and detecting forgeries.
For over two decades, the False and Authentic Documents Online (FADO) system has been the EU’s central resource for sharing images of authentic and false documents, helping member states in the fight against document and identity fraud.
As identity fraudsters and their technology tools grow ever more sophisticated, the FADO system must keep pace. The next-generation EBCG FADO (European Border and Coast Guard False and Authentic Documents Online) system is being developed to do just that. Frontex has worked with experts from member states to draft the new standards.
The new EBCG FADO system will:
- Introduce harmonized, coordinated standards for capturing, processing, and storing digital images of documents, resulting in a common language for document security across Europe and beyond.
- Ensure that every image of a document meets strict quality requirements.
- Create greater consistency across countries using EBCG FADO.
The end result will be that frontline border guards will experience faster, more accurate document and identity checks, and forensic experts will have access to a trustworthy archive of reference materials.
Frontex reports that, “Looking ahead, EBCG FADO will run on a new technical solution designed around user needs. It will offer stronger interoperability, more efficient data processing and a scalable architecture to support both existing and emerging operational needs in document and identity checks and in combating document fraud. In short, it is a system built for today, and ready for tomorrow’s border-security challenges.”
