On July 17, 2023, the District of Columbia Department of Motor Vehicles will begin issuing a redesigned driver’s license and identification card, incorporating iconic DC landmarks and imagery. The credentials’ new design incorporates updated security features to help prevent fraud.

“Uniquely DC” design elements

The design features images of iconic DC images such as cherry blossoms, a Wood Thrush bird, and the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge.

  • Secure, laser-engraved portrait photo and card holder data
  • A dynamic feature flips from secondary portrait to date of birth when card is tilted.
  • Additional images of “DC” and district map with inset flag are visible when card is tilted.

The DC DMV last redesigned its driving and identity credentials in 2017.
