Cyprus’ Civil Registry and Migration Department says the country’s citizens will receive a new version of identity cards, Security Document World reports.

According to the department, the new ID cards will be biometric and meet all the requirements set by international and European law.

The department added that the cards will have increased levels of security against forgery and impersonation.

Security Document World reports changes to the Cypriot ID cards “are a result of EU Regulation 2019/1157 on strengthening the security of identity cards of Union citizens and of residence documents issued to Union citizens and their family members exercising their right of free movement.”

According to the report, all existing IDs will remain valid until their expiration date “and will not be replaced.”
