According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bulgarian citizens will be able to enter the UK without a visa from 1 January 2021. They will then be able to stay in the UK for up to 6 months.

Bulgarians will not be allowed to live, work or have access to public funds on a permanent basis.
If you want to stay longer for work, study or to settle in the UK you will need to apply for a visa. You can apply for a visa via the UK Government website.

Holders of biometric passports can fill in the visa application via a smartphone application.
If they are unable to do so, they will need to visit a visa application center.

Visa applicants are also required to pay a health care fee, which gives them access to health care through the National Health Service. Information about this can be found at

Citizens of the EU, EEA and Switzerland will need a passport to travel to the UK from 1 October 2021.

Bulgarians who have obtained “residence status” or “temporary residence status” can enter the UK with an identity card until at least December 31, 2025.

After December 31, 2025, a national identity card can only be used if the card meets the security standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization
