The Republic of Bulgaria has begun issuing a new-and-improved national identity card for citizens who apply for it. Issuance began in mid-June of this year.

The polycarbonate card (shown below) features a laser engraved ID number as well as an integrated second photo of the bearer, repeated on the back side. Background printing runs across the primary photograph of the holder.

Bulgaria is new to the Schengen Area

Bulgaria joined the Schengen Area in March 2024. At this time, it enjoys maritime borders open with the area, but land border controls remain in place pending agreement to lift them. The country’s new ID card is aligned with the Schengen Area regulations for credentials.

What is new and notable

The new ID card represents the first update/redesign to the credential since 2010 and brings with it some notable changes, which include:

  • A biometric chip containing, among other things, the bearer’s fingerprint and facial data. The chip is located on the back side of the card.
  • A tighter time of validity for seniors. The new ID card is valid for 10 or 30 years (the holder’s choice) for those over age 70. Previous ID cards were valid for an unlimited period after age 58. The new validity parameters are consistent with European regulations which do not allow permanent ID cards.

The Interior Ministry has made new card optional for Bulgarian citizens. Previously issued cards will be valid until August 2nd, 2031, or until their expiry date.
