The Kingdom of Bahrain’s Information & eGovernment Authority (iGA) has unveiled its new national ID card, redesigned and enhanced with advanced security features and a more modern substrate, along with features and a strategy that will give cardholders secure access to government services.
Perhaps most impressive is that the card is designed to function as a travel document that meets International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards—making Bahrain the first country in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) to achieve this capability.
Previously issued ID cards shall remain valid until their stated expiration date. As with the previous ID card, the new ID card is valid for a maximum of five years, with one exception: validity is 10 years for those above 70 years old.
Traditional images, modern security features
The imagery in the new ID Card reflects the history and culture of Bahrain as well as the treasures of its ocean and land. The card is made from polycarbonate material, making it eco-friendly and secure. This is a significant upgrade from the plasticized paper used in the previous ID card.

Other features of the new ID card are its biometric elements and increased storage capacity.
It’s notable that the Kingdom of Bahrain began issuing a modernized passport in 2023, the first in more than ten years. Like the new ID card, the passport blends images that celebrate the kingdom’s culture and history with cutting edge security features.
The national ID card as a travel document
The new national ID card incorporates Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) technology as well as a “travel application-ready” chip, both of which set the stage for its use as a travel document for cross-border identification by nations accepting digital travel credentials.
Bahrain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Office of Nationality, Passports and Residence Affairs aim to integrate their services and gain the cooperation of other countries to promote the adoption of the ID card as an acceptable travel document.
Bahrain’s 2023-2026 digital transformation plan
Bahrain’s upgraded ID card is part of the country’s coordinated 2023-2026 digital transformation plan, which includes six self-service platforms for government services and the establishment of a national laboratory for developing innovative public sector solutions. The kingdom aims to become a major player in the digital transformation taking place in the Saudi region.
