As reported by RTSH, Albania will introduce three new banknotes this year.

By the end of 2021, a new denomination of 10 thousand lek will appear on the market.

This banknote will be in circulation for the first time, it has not been made public yet what appearance it will have and the material and elements it will hold. Also, new denominations of 1 thousand lekë and 2 thousand lekë will be released, these banknotes have already been presented.

The last denomination of 500 Lekë will be issued in 2022, while 200 and 5000 Lekë were put  into circulation back in September 30, 2019.

In order to make the new notes safer and making them harder for counterfeiters the new series of banknotes have been produced with the latest technologies.

The banknotes were meant to be issued in 2020, but because of the pandemic the deadlines had to be postponed to this this year.

According to the Bank of Albania, the production of banknotes was suspended due to COVID-19. The central bank has also said that they can not rule out the possibility that the process could be delayed again due to technical difficulties that could occur.
