Indonesia plans to celebrate its 80th Independence Day next year by issuing a redesigned passport to its citizens. The Directorate General of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights recently offered a public preview of the new passport, to be issued starting August 17, 2025. Immigration director general Silmy Karim made the announcement in a press conference on August 17.

The overarching goal of the new design is to enhance both cultural representation and security. With that in mind, here are some of the notable changes to the passport:
- The cover of the passport will be red with white lettering and designs, in line with Indonesia’s national colors. (This will be a major change from the current passports’ blue-green cover.)
- Inside the new passport booklet, the visa pages will feature traditional fabric patterns highlighting the country’s regional cultural elements.
- Security will be greatly enhanced in the new passport, which will meet the latest international standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). Some of the new security features will include a heat-resistant cover, UV images, and additional holograms.
Indonesia last redesigned its passport in 2014. It is assumed that, even after issuance of the new passport begins, all passports in circulation will remain valid until their stated expiration date.
